In this episode I talk a little about where this podcast came from. It was originally just going to be a single blog post about a major surgery I had and the scar it left. I was going to connect that physical scar to internal scars. Well I wanted a picture for that blog post—enter my photographer husband! Because of the placement of that scar, I had to basically be nude.

Now remember, this is my husband taking the photos. I still felt so…weird. So vulnerable and nervous. And I realized immediately I had found my internal scar to connect it to. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this idea was so much more than a blog post. It was more than a series of blog posts! So Scars We Share was born!

This first episode is my story. I ask my guests to be open and vulnerable on this show, and I would never ask them to do that if I wasn’t willing to do it too. The physical scar that I talk about is a six inch scar on my back from 2016 (yes, that’s me on the home page). I had a life threatening infection in my left lung that required a thoracotomy, chest tubes, a PICC line, and a rough recovery.

For my internal scar, I talk about my issues with self-esteem. It’s something I really struggled with when I was younger. It’s something I have to constantly be aware of and work on, because that negative voice still exists inside of me. (And let’s be honest, there’s lots of outside negative voices in our society.) So I also discuss ways I worked and continue to work on my self-esteem.

And be sure to listen through for a preview from Episode 2!
